Prof. Hirose studied for her undergraduate degree at Keio University, before earning her master’s degree from the University of Tokyo, later withdrawing after completing doctoral course requirements there. She gained a PhD in Media and Governance from Keio University. She worked as a lecturer at Keio University, then became an associate professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies’ Graduate School in Regional Cultural Studies and the University of Shizuoka. She also held a variety of roles as an advisor to the National Security Agency between 2018 and 2020. She received the 21st Asia-Pacific Award in 2009 for her book ‘The Caucasus – the Crossroads of International Relations’ in 2008 and the Keio University Award in 2023.
